Install

Windows01

  1. 01

    Run RemoteFriend-Setup.exe.

  2. 02

If SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher, choose More info → Run anyway.

  3. 03

Start RemoteFriends from the Start menu.

macOS02

  1. 01

Open the .dmg and drag the app to Applications.

  2. 02

If macOS won't open it: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (macOS 14 and older: right-click the app → Open).

  3. 03

Allow RemoteFriends under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and Accessibility, then start it again.

Linux03

  1. 01

Ubuntu / Debian: double-click the .deb, or install it from a terminal:

    sudo apt install ./RemoteFriend-linux-amd64.deb
  2. 02

Other distributions: extract the archive and run ./install.sh — no root needed.

  3. 03

Wayland: the first time, the desktop asks to share the screen. Turn on “Allow Remote Interaction” and click Share.

§ 03

Connect

  1. 01

Open RemoteFriends on the computer you want to reach. It shows Your ID and a password.

  2. 02

The first time it opens, sign in with your email address and the 6-digit code you receive — now it can be reached from anywhere. It's free; without it, it works on the local network.

  3. 03

On the other computer, open RemoteFriends, enter the ID and password and click Connect. From a phone, open the web address shown next to 📱 on the shared computer. This side needs no key.

  4. 04

The shared computer asks first: Allow, Always allow or Deny. A trusted device needs no password next time; your own devices can even connect without being asked.

§ 04

What it does

  • F.01Live screen, mouse, keyboard and touch, with the computer's sound
  • F.02Works from any phone browser — nothing to install on the phone
  • F.03File transfer both ways with progress and cancel, plus a shared clipboard
  • F.04Direct peer-to-peer connection whenever the network allows it
  • F.05Safe view keeps RemoteFriends and private apps such as password managers out of the picture
  • F.06Several monitors — you choose which ones viewers may switch to — keys like Ctrl+Alt+Del, and switching sides with another computer running RemoteFriends
  • F.07See who is connected, choose what each viewer may do, take back control at any time
  • F.08Updates itself: new versions are signed, checked and installed while nobody is connected
  • F.09Windows 10 and 11, macOS 11 or newer, Linux with X11 or Wayland
§ 05

Private by design

Every session is end-to-end encrypted (ECDH P-256 key exchange, AES-256-GCM). The relay server only passes on ciphertext: it never sees the password, the screen, the input or the files. The password changes every time RemoteFriends starts, every new device has to be approved on the shared computer, and trusted devices can be removed or blocked at any time. Updates are signed: the app installs nothing without that signature.

§ 06

Access keys

Making a computer reachable over the internet needs an access key for the blobidea relay. RemoteFriends gets yours when you sign in with your email address: free, for 2 computers and a year, and the same address always gets the same key — after reinstalling, too. Connecting to a computer needs no key, and on a local network everything works without one.

§ 07

Open source

The app, the terminal host and the phone page are free software under the GNU GPL v3: anyone can read, check and build the code. The relay server is not part of it.

§ 08

Report a security problem

Found a weakness? Please write to support@blobidea.com with the subject “RemoteFriends security” instead of posting it publicly. Confirmed problems are fixed as fast as possible, and the app shows a red notice until the security update is installed.

The installers are not code-signed yet, which is why Windows and macOS ask for confirmation once. Every file is listed with its SHA-256 checksum.
